Why IPA: In French what you see is not what you say. The phonetics are a help.
But in an ideal situation you should learn and be familiar with the spellings of French.

Nasal resonance:

If you overdo the nasal resonance, it's difficult to sing and to know your base vowel.
This is perticularly relevant for the higher part of the voice.

Question 1: What is my base vowel?

Practice the five vowels: i - e - ɛ - ɛ̃ - a - ɑ
After eachother and very legato like it's the most beautiful phrase.

Make the phonetics on a seperate piece of paper on your own.
Then check it with a ready made one.

Sources:
- IPA source (Opera and Lied)
- Oxford lieder
- Nico Castel (Opera)

How coachings go:
- First spoken text (only vowels, then with consonants)
- Then say on a monotone (only vowels, then consonants)
- Then sing at pitch (only vowels, then consonants)

Preperation: See powerpoint

The œ and ə are the same sound.

THE CONSONANT BELONGING TO (JUST BEFORE) THE ə IS LAZY (SUBTLE, DISCREET). BECAUSE IT IS AN UNSTRESSED VOWEL.

The base vowel of ɑ̃ is an ɔ.

Lips are always soft. Gently round, gently pout/kiss. Keep your singing space.

Aurest la belle helene - Offenbach

Accent tonique: falls on the final spoken syllable of a word, and usually on a strong beat in the music. It will usually happen 'naturally' because of that.
Accent d'insistance/oratoire/affectif/émotionnel: it helps 'offering' more clearly important words to your audience. It helps comprehension as well as communication of emotions. It is an expressive tool. It can be explained as a gentle leaning on the first syllable of an important word. We use it all the time, even in normal speech. It does not change the rhythm written by the composer. absolument pas/ABsolument pas. Always like a little jellyfish, you touch and move: you keep moving. It's never a downward accent. Take a highlighter and highlight all the accent d'insistance in the score.
Semi consonants:
Consonants:
r: As a general rule, no prolonged rolled r.
Three types of r - Rolled r: barely present in singing, except in Baroque for special effect. - Flipped r: - Spoken r: Key words:

Editions:

Heugel, Durand, Choudens, Rouart, Esching, Jobert, Salabert, Leduc. For Carmen: Alkor Bärenreiter, Schott.
Editions French Baroque: - Rameau: Bärenreiter. - Fuzeau, centre de Musique Baroque de Versailles, - be careful of Saint-Saens editions. Does the pronunciation change in French Baroque: mostly not, the spelling changes a bit: â = as, ait = oit.

How to choose important words?

You obviously need a word-for-word translation to do This Grammar: All verbs BUT not 'to be' and 'to have' Adverbs Nouns + names Adjectives Allon, il le faut mon pauvre chevalier verb verb adjective noun Possesive adjectives we do not stress. Semantics (meaning): Anything which is important because it changes the meaning of the whole phrase or adds to it. Watch out for words like: mais, si, sans, ô. Mais, ô mon bien-aimé! But, oh my beloved! Careful, in French we do not generally stress possessive adjectives such as mon, ta, ses, notre etc.

Word for word translation:

- Mother tongue and English - Any word you cannot find, start by putting it in Google with the word 'verb' next to it. If it is a verb it will appear in its infinitive form. - Do not stop at the first given translation, scroll down to see all of them and decide later, with more context. - Learn all the nouns with their gender. - Learn all verb forms with their infinitive form.

Liaison

- Remember that sometimes you need to do a liaison between words. You link the final consonant of a word to the initial vowel sound of the next word.
- Have a look at the chapter on liaisons in Thomas Grubb's Singing in French.
- There are three types of liaisons: forbidden, compulsory and optional.
1. Are the two words related grammatically: liaison. 2. Is it a noun in the singular: no liaison. 3. Is it on of the words which is built to the forbidden liaisons (like et) En haut (no liaison) -rs, -rt, rd, you do the liaison with [r]: dans mon coeur dort un clair de lune [dɔrɛ̃n]

Examples:

- forbidden: AFTER 'et'
- Compulsory: words which are grammatically linked:
- Optional: depends on taste, tradition and era. After a noun in the singular: Baroque yes, now no.
- les haricots: no liaison! Dictionary says: ['ariko]. - remember that you can denasalise õ when you liaise it with a following word. mon amour: [mõ] becomes [mɔnamur] mon enfant: [] becomes [mɔɑ̃ fɑ̃ ]

IPA

mille, ville, tranquille altijd [il] Double consonants only: immense, immaculé, illustre, allègre etc. les tes ses ces mes des etc can be pronounced in various ways: it depends on what comes after. Remember that in nasal vowels the ɑ̃ think ɔ for õ think o ɛ̃ think somewhere between a and e and a little nasal resonance for oe think and say ɛ̃ and bring your lips a tiny bit forward. i - e - ɛ - ɛ̃ - a - ɑ a: a, ɑ â: ɑ an/am: ɑ̃ b: b c: k, s d: d e: e, ɛ, œ, ə ê: ɛ en/em: f: f g: g h: ʔ i: i î: i j: ʒ k: k l: l m: m n: n o: o, ɔ ô: ɔ on/om: õ p: p q: k r: s: s, z t: t u: y û: y v: v w: x: gz (aan het begin van een woord), Cadix [kadiks]. y: z: z ui: ɥ oui: wi oi: wa ou: u (e)il: j ille: ij/il ch: ʃ gn:ɲ

Les Huguenots - G. Meyerbeer

Tableau Seconde

Scena I

URBAIN - Rondeau du page
Non, non non non non non,
vous n'avez jamais, je gage,
Non, rien appris de tel
Par la voix du jeune page,
Ah! Non, non non non non non,
Et les filles du village
Jamais n'oublieront ce trait

Entouré de gens sans nombre,
Sur ses yeux un voile, un voile sombre,
Un beau cavalier parait;
Glissant comme une ombre il passe, il passe
Et d'un pied léger franchit l'espace;
Et jeunes et vieux...
Le suivant des yeux,
Disent: Quel est-il?
Et puis, où va-t-il,
Et que cherche-t-il
C'est un grand babil!

Non, non non non non non,
vous n'avez jamais, je gage,
Non, rien appris de tel
Par la voix du jeune page,
Ah! Non, non non non non non,
Et les filles du village
Jamais n'oublieront ce trait

CHOEUR DE FEMMES
Chut! quel bon tour!
Mais ne rions que sous cape;
C'est un secret qui nous échappe!
(Un secret à nos yeux
est caché dans ce jour;)
On doit taire, Doux mystère
où perce un tendre amour;
(Que penser? Cherchons bien:
c'est un jeu de l'amour,)
L'amour même, Roi suprême,
(Ah! Bien, oui, c'est un jeu
du malin dieu d'amour)
Sous l'ombrage de ces chênes
tient sa cour!
(Car l'amour dans ces prés,
dans ces bois.)

URBAIN
Le cavalier n'y voit goutte,
Il cherche à tâtons sa route, Le contendu;
Les enfants mutins, L'agacent des mains,
Leurs rieuses soeurs
Lui jettent des fleurs!

Non, non non non non non,
vous n'avez jamais, je gage,
Non, rien appris de tel
Par la voix du jeune page,
Ah! Non, non non non non non,
Et les filles du village
Jamais n'oublieront ce trait

C'est un cortège riant et beau,
Ah! Quel cortège riant et beau,
Le cavalier sous son bandeau, Suivi,
pressé des jeunes filles du hameau,
S'avance, approche du château
Ah! Quelle fête pour le château.
Quelle fête!

C'est lui, il vient, il vient ici!
Le voici!
Nee, nee nee nee nee nee,
u hebt nog nooit, wed ik,
nee, nooit zoiets vernomen
uit de mond van de jonge page.
Ah! Nee, nee nee nee nee nee,
en de meisjes van het dorp
zullen dit voorval nooit vergeten.

Omringd door talloze mensen,
Over zijn ogen een sluier, een donkere sluier,
verschijnt een knappe ruiter.
Ongrijbaar als een schaduw komt hij voorbij, hij komt voorbij,
en met lichte tred doorkruist hij de ruimte;
En jong en oud...
volgen hem met hun ogen
en zeggen: Wie is hij?
En dan, waar gaat hij heen?
En wat zoekt hij?
Het is een groot gekeuvel!

Nee, nee nee nee nee nee,
u hebt nog nooit, wed ik,
nee, nooit zoiets vernomen
uit de mond van de jonge page.
Ah! Nee, nee nee nee nee nee,
en de meisjes van het dorp
zullen dit voorval nooit vergeten.

KOOR VAN VROUWEN
Sst! Wat een grap!
Maar laten we alleen onder de cape lachen;
het is een geheim dat ons ontglipt!
(Een geheim dat voor onze ogen
verborgen is vandaag.)
We moeten zwijgen, een zoet mysterie
waarin een tedere liefde in doorschemert.
(Wat te denken? Goed zoeken:
het is een spel van de liefde.)
De liefde zelf, opperste koning,
(Ach! Goed, ja, het is het spel
van de sluwe god der liefde,)
houdt onder de schaduw van deze eiken
zijn hof!
(Want de liefde woont in deze weiden,
in deze bossen.)

URBAIN
De ruiter ziet geen druppel,
hij zoekt tastend zijn weg, de arme man/mededinger.
De ondeugende kinderen plagen hem met hun handen,
hun lachende zusters
werpen hem bloemen toe!

Nee, nee nee nee nee nee,
u hebt nog nooit, wed ik,
nee, nooit zoiets vernomen
uit de mond van de jonge page.
Ah! Nee, nee nee nee nee nee,
en de meisjes van het dorp
zullen dit voorval nooit vergeten.

Het is een vrolijke, prachtige stoet!
Ah! Wat een vrolijke, prachtige stoet!
De ruiter, onder zijn blinddoek, gevolgd,
voortgedreven door de jonge meisjes van het gehucht,
trekt verder, nadert het kasteel.
Ah! Wat een feest voor het kasteel!
Wat een feest!

Hij is het! Hij komt, hij komt hierheen!
Daar is hij!
